Small Business Advice

Starting a Small Business is Difficult
But it Doesn't Have To Be Hard

Just Go About It The Right Way.

Good small business advice, when starting up, is so very important.

Commencing a new business can be a daunting task but if you go about it the right way, you can certainly make it much easier.

Generally speaking there are two steps to consider prior to commencement.

• The actual nuts & bolts of starting a business (costs, staffing, premises, etc.)
• Attracting customers, how & where do I get my customer from?

The Best Way to Start.

When it comes to actually starting, there’s simply no better small business advice than the following:

"You must have the passion... and the drive to pursue your passion"

And, you need to be an expert in the industry that your business will operate in.

The vast majority of small business owners work very long hours and if you don’t have the burning desire to win, you’ll fail.

Simple as that.

The stronger your passion, the harder you’ll work and the bigger your profits will be.

So first things first, you need to gain as much marketing information as possible about your industry.

Find out about local competitors, research your potential customers and find out how much demand there is for your services.

Estimate the cost to set up the business and keep it running for the first year.

Passion alone will NOT make it work.

Many new business owners fail because they have not completed financial projections & cash flows.

It’s understandable to some degree as this the most boring & mundane part any business.

So do your research and don’t forget to include items like stock & marketing costs in your estimates.

You will also need to find out as much as possible about tax and how to minimize it.

It may be worth talking to an accountant to keep track of your books.

If you choose to go it alone bookkeeping, tracking expenses, etc will take up a lot of your time and it can be very confusing & frustrating.

When planning your financials it’s best to shoot for profit maximization but base your estimates on worse case scenario.

Creating a Client Base.

And THE most logical small business advice... you need customers.

A no brainer really.

Clearly no business can survive without customers and so you need to consider how you’re going to get some.... a lot in fact.

Marketing and advertising is extremely important and the strategies will vary depending on your business model.

Is your business going to be run online or offline?

Generally, offline advertising media is newspapers, television, radio and just about every business uses print for marketing

Internet based marketing
& advertising would consist of a website, placing banners on websites or placing an ad on a relevant classified website.

If you run a small business offline then customers can physically see your business, but online you need to learn about optimizing your website so people searching for your products & services are able to find you.

Starting a small business is hard work and it will require a lot of effort and dedication.

Before you begin, you really do need to do your homework and find out as much as you can about who your ideal customers are, how to reach them and who your competitors are.

But I guess the best small business advice is, make sure you have enough resources to keep the business going until it starts generating a profit.
