and Many Strings

Online Business Writing Courses Will Get You There Quicker.

Personal Reference Letter of Recommendation... what is it, apart from something you learn during business writing classes?

It’s not a personal reference letter which is usually from a friend or a co-worker that recommends someone for a job, position or a school or something similar.

This type of letter attests to the person’s character, talents, skills, etc.

A personal letter of recommendation is usually from a former or current employer & it’s a different style of letter writing.

You may need one if you’re looking for a new job, or an additional job. Or, you may be applying for professional development courses or participating in an election for a professional club.

At any rate, the personal letter is usually from a friend, a relative or co-worker and a recommendation letter is usually from a representative of a company.

What’s The Best Format For a Personal Reference Letter of Recommendation?

The letter should conform to an acceptable business letter format.

If the recommendation is from a representative of a company, it’s best to use company use letterhead whereas a personal recommendation is best on plain stationery.

How Can I Get Help Writing The Letter?

The internet is a great place to find examples for a personal reference letter of recommendation.

You can also find business letter templates on the net that provide the format and all you have to do in fill in the details. There is also letter writing software that pre-formulated business letters of all types.

What Should It Say?

Basically, the letter should convey your personal experience with the individual that you are writing the letter for.

It should point out their strengths and how their qualities will benefit the person or company that you are writing the letter to. It should say that you recommend them for the position, acceptance, or whatever the intent of letter is.

The letter should be positive and it should include your contact information. Usually, you won’t hear from the receiver, but contact information adds credibility.

Here’s a sample of a personal reference letter of recommendation -

    To Whom It May Concern:

This letter is my personal recommendation for Cathy Douglas.

Until just recently, I have been Cathy’s immediate supervisor for several years. I found her to be consistently pleasant, tackling all assignments with dedication and a smile.

Besides being a joy to work with, Cathy is a take-charge person who is able to present creative ideas and communicate the benefits. She has successfully developed several marketing plans for our company which have resulted in increased revenue.

During her tenure, not only did we witness a 27% increase sales we also saw a substantial increase in profits.

The new revenue was a direct result of the plans implemented by Cathy.

Though she was an asset to our marketing efforts, Cathy was also extraordinarily helpful in other areas of the company.

In addition to writing effective training modules for sales representatives, Cathy assumed a leadership role in sales meetings, inspiring and motivating other employees.

I highly recommend Cathy for employment. She is a team player and would be a great asset to any organization.

    Yours etc

It’s also beneficial to know what particular position the person is applying for so qualities & skills applicable to that position, can be highlighted & expanded upon.

In summary, a personal reference letter of recommendation needs to focus on the strengths, skills & achievements of the individual… not the author’s personal opinion.
