Letter Writing
Business Letter or Sales Letter... The Magic is Always in The Words.
Your Business Writing Classes Will Make it Look Easy.
Letter writing is a skill and the ability to craft a 'good one' is a valuable asset for any business owner and can be learnt through online business writing courses.
Writing a compelling letter looks & sounds easy enough doesn’t it… you just sit down with a coffee & start banging away. NOT! Here's a good analogy. Watching a brick layer working away laying bricks looks so easy, but have you ever tried it? Easy it isn't! It’s actually very difficult to get it right. The more skilled the brickie is, the easier he makes it look. You probably wrote your first letter in the 3rd grade. I can pretty much guarantee; clients and prospects won't be influenced or impressed by that kind of talent. Sorry to say, it won't cut the mustard and they probably won't put the letter in a scrapbook or stick it on their refrigerator.
Letter Writing Decisions.
When writing a business letter it will generally fall into one of the following four categories: - Business to Business Letters
- Business to Client Letters
- Business to Prospect Letters
- Business to Employee Letters
Whether you are writing a
business letter of intent
to another business, a customer or business prospects, or an employee, overall, the business letter needs to: - Be professional
- Clearly convey your thoughts
- Make a point or prompt an action
Basic formats and business letter writing skills will ensure that the letter is professional. Before starting, it is best to make an outline of the thoughts that you want to convey, the point that you want to make, and the action that you desire. Use the outline to stay on track and to make sure the finished letter achieves what it set out to do.
Sections of a Business Letter.
Basically, a business letter has the following sections: - The sender's address and contact information
- The date that the letter was written
- The name and address of the intended receiver
- A salutation
- The body of the letter
- A closing and the signature of the writer
Optional Sections :
If the letter was typed by someone other than the writer, it is appropriate to put the writer's initials in capital letters following by a colon and the initials of the typist in lower-case letters. If there are enclosures being sent with the letter, it is wise to note "Enclosures" and how many or a specific description of the enclosure. If the business letter was forwarded to someone else, you can use "cc:" followed by the name of the person that it was forwarded to. If you prefer to state a reference for the letter, the letters "Re:" should be included before the reference and it should be placed before the salutation. The purpose is just to let the reader know what the letter is about.

small business marketing
material is much different than writing a general business letter. You cannot rely on business letter writing skills in producing such copy. Be sure to see my examples of sales letters and direct response copy for information and guidance.
