Need to know how to write an outline?

An outline is generally used when writing reports or as a referral for a speech.

For example, you would use one when learning how to write a report.

An outline usually doesn’t use full sentences, just the headings and main bullet points of the report or speech.

Before we get into instructions of how to write an outline, let’s first review the purpose…



The Purpose of An Outline...


An outline is basically an organization tool. It makes it easier to collect & focus on your thoughts and accomplish your mission.

In the real world, nobody actually reviews your outline so don’t stress over the format. In the academic world, your professor may require a copy of an outline.

If so, follow the instructions that are given to you by the professor.

However if you were, say, getting some online life insurance quotes then you'll need to have a very accurate outline of your details & proposal.



What Should Be Included in an Outline…


Basically, an outline consists of headings, and subheadings that support the heading.

For instance, if you are writing a business report your outline may appear as follows:

Introduction

Research or Case Studies

  • Literature number one
  • Literature number two
  • Literature number three

Analysis and Evaluation

  • Supporting statement number one
  • Supporting statement number two
  • Supporting statement number three

Conclusion

Don’t waste a lot of time trying to learn how to write an outline, instead, realize the purpose of it.

It does not need the same formatting as say a business letter or sales letters.

It’s simply a tool to ensure that your report or speech is organized, makes sense and contains all of the points that you intend to make.

It will make the process of writing a report or speech easier on you.

A report or speech that is developed through the use of an outline will not require a lot of rewriting or reorganization, so it’s a worthwhile event to learn how to write an outline, but it is not your main objective.

View it as a tool for creating the best organized report or speech that you can possibly make.
